Sauna Costs - Here's What To Expect

Let's face it, sauna costs are going to vary from state to state, from county to county and even from country to country. Now that makes trying to give you some idea of how much it will cost to run your sauna just a wee bit difficult. Oh, and here's another factor that will determine sauna costs - what type (model) you have in your home. Is it basic with a small energy efficient heater? Or is it a fancy model with all the luxury extras? Or is it a single seater, two seater or four seater model? Now that your head is spinning, let's try and break this down into something a little easier to digest.

Sauna costs will of course depend on the cost of electricity in your area, the kilowatt rating of your heater and how much you use your sauna. Don't know the kilowatt rate? That at least is an easy problem to solve. Just call your local utility and ask, or you might find that kind of information on your bill. Let's just say that in most regions of North America the cost of using electricity is approximately 8 cents per kilowatt hour. You can do the math on your own once you find out what you need to know from your electrical utility company.

If you use 8 cents as the example, then roughly speaking, most home saunas will bill out sauna costs at 20 to 40 cents an hour (give or take). Not bad actually, and if you don't keep it turned on all the time, then it would likely be a minimal operating cost. This would be approximately equivalent to running your vacuum an average amount of time in a month (whatever average may be for you). So that could mean about $10.00 a month in sauna costs.

Before buying a home sauna, also ask the manufacturer, or retail store if they have estimates on sauna costs. Chances are they do, because they have to know people are going to be asking that question as part of getting pre-purchase information.

Other things you need to take into consideration before you buy or install, is the way it is constructed. The better it is built, the more efficient and cost effective it may be. Find out what type of heater is in it. That makes a difference in sauna costs as well. Is the sauna you are considering plug into a normal 110 volt wall receptacle? That would mean no electrical work or plumbing would be needed.

How quickly will your sauna warm up? Less warm up time means more savings in sauna costs. What temperature are you operating your sauna at? The higher you heat, the more it costs, and vice versa. These are sauna costs associated with running your sauna, but what about the cost of buying it? You need to figure that into the equation as well. Good news though - even if your sauna is expensive it will pay off in two ways - increased property value and health benefits for you and your family.

Saunas start at about $1,800 for a two person (precut model). Prefabricated models start at roughly $3,000. Again, it depends on size, type of wood used, type of equipment and the various options included. For instance you can even get sauna models with sound systems in them. But, all things said and done, your sauna costs may be well worth it for the benefits you get in return.
